UMA - A Deeper Dive

  • UMA is better described by what we do in the real world
  • At the moment that involves 3 distinct strategies to reveal ourselves and slowly revealing manifesto in what we do
  • To that end we have created three specific strategies to do this:
1. Create platforms for exhibiting our individual working practice - on that basis we have created Uma Reveal which are 3 separate two week exhibitions taking place during the Venice Biennale at the Pallazzo Albrizzi-Capello each with their own subject which are 1. Rituals, 2 Consciousness and 3. Visions all will exhibit in the theme of Anima Mundi (the Soul of the World) at the Palazzo Albrizzi Capello. Dates here

2. Create a themed installation where a group of UMA artists can express their creative thoughts collaboratively, so we have created Wilderness a group installation of 21 screens on the subject of how we express our internal psyche in outward ideas. This will be exhibiting place during the Venice Biennale at the European Cultural Centre at the  Pallazzo Mora in Strada Nova form 9 May to 22 November, 2026
→ go to project page
3. Create a themed research process that eventuates in a set of projects that scaffold upon each other to answer a question through audience involvement

Each of these three strategies,
  1. Exhibitions of artists work
  2. Collaborations that utilise UMA's creativity in joint installations to realise a collective goal
  3. Creating research strategies that organise Uma's artists inputs sequentially - for instance installations, performances, joint theoretical debates, specific measurements of engagement using different levels of granularity of exhibition - all of which will feature all of the UMA artists work sequentially ordered to prduce not only the answer to a research question but to attempt to question how art has previously been created and how it might be created in future.

The first and second behaviours are perhaps easier to understand than the third as there are distinct examples we can point the reader to - however 'practice as research' may require some explaining:

Practice as Research proposes that new knowledge and new kinds of art can be achieved by creating research artefacts - an object, an experience, a dialogue, or a written argument to investigate creative subject areas and involves the following procedure:

  • Investigate theoretical and practical context of subject area
  • Construct a research question from perceived gaps in that knowledge
  • Reflect and then respond with research hypothesis
  • Encode research hypothesis within artefact
  • Exhibit artefact, collect data and evaluate the efficacy of the research Artefact via audience response
  • Critically reflect on the research process up to this point in traditional academic forms (peer-reviewed articles)
  • Present conclusions and indicate further research

This may seem dry but when understood answers many grant application models with a rigorous basis in 'fact' (a much disputed term) but also enables 'play' another disputed form.

To achieve our goal we will create a route with a set of milestone events which will chart our progress. Structured as seven interrelated inquiries into sensing, the project invites each artist to approach intuition as both method and material. These investigations unfold through video installation, AI interaction, biofeedback, live systems, and sculptural interfaces, forming an evolving exhibition that functions as both laboratory and ritual.
United Media Artists are a founding group of artists who bridged the analog-to-digital transition — a passage that shapes a singular creative perspective.  We began our creative works in the analogue era and have carried on throughout the digital era, maintaining successful practices throughout these transitions. We have fought to retain our creative explorations in a new technology driven environment.

As UMA evolves, it welcomes new generations of digital-native artists into this ongoing dialogue. Like us, emerging artists will maintain a grasp of constructing their art through a series of transformations in our core media. Changes in techniques may come and go, just as value comes and goes in the markets, but we will continue to make sure that our work will remain consistently compelling, impactful, committed and dedicated to the cause of art.

In our future creations we shall honour our diversity in a unified way to forge new directions, utilising our multiformity and global locations as a force that supports, challenges, and invigorates UMA, whilst celebrating our individual creativities to effect the development of art in the 21st century.
